Is the Virgin Voyages Bar Tab Worth It in 2026?
Virgin sells no drink packages. The Bar Tab is prepaid bar credit with bonus tiers - up to $250 free on a $1,000 buy - and the risk that unused credit vanishes at voyage end. Here is the honest math, plus the gratuity change most sites still miss.
The short answer
Usually yes, in the right size. The bonus is real money (12.5% to 25% extra credit), but only if you would spend it anyway - unused credit INCLUDING the bonus is forfeited when the voyage ends.
On our worked 7-night trip for 2 at 3 drinks a day (about $546 of tip-inclusive drinks), a $300 Bar Tab with its $50 bonus trims the trip from $854 to $804. Buy the tier at or below your projected spend, not above it.
The worked example, priced both ways
Scarlet Lady, 7 nights, 2 adults, 3 drinks a day each. Virgin includes all specialty dining and basic Wi-Fi in every fare, so those lines are genuinely $0.

The $300 tier saves $50 on this trip. The $500 tier would cover all $546 of drinks but cost $500 all-in and forfeit $54 of credit - $4 worse than the $300 route ($300 + $196 = $496 on drinks).
Drink midpoints come from Virgin's own published tip-inclusive ranges: beer $7-9, basic cocktails around $11 (full observed range to $17), and 40% of wines by the glass under $11. We model the average drink at $13.

Bar Tab rules that decide the math
- Bought pre-cruise only. Refundable until 24 hours before sailing; once the voyage ends, unused credit including the bonus is forfeited.
- Per person but NOT required for cabin mates, and freely shareable - one Bar Tab can cover a couple.
- Spendable on drinks onboard and at Bimini Beach Club, including specialty coffee, pressed juice, and mocktails - not spa, retail, bottles to go, or excursions.
- No gratuity is added on Bar Tab spend, and menu prices are tip-inclusive - what the menu says is what leaves the tab.
- Sizing rule from the math: project your spend (drinks a day x price x nights x drinkers) and buy the tier AT OR BELOW it. Overbuying hands the bonus straight back at disembarkation.
The gratuity change most comparisons still miss
“All gratuities included” is STALE. For bookings made on or after October 7, 2025, Virgin's VoyageFair Choices charges $20 per Sailor per night PREPAID (locked, non-refundable) or $22 per night settled onboard (adjustable). Bookings made before that date keep the old bundled model - and Virgin's own older fact sheet still claims gratuities are included, which is why so many comparison articles get this wrong. There is no tipping on top either way, and drink prices stay tip-inclusive.
- Included in every fare: all 20+ eateries including the specialty restaurants (no covers), essential drinks (still and sparkling water, fountain soda, non-pressed juice, drip coffee, tea, milk), group fitness, entertainment, Bimini Beach Club entry, and Wi-Fi by fare tier.
- Still out of pocket: alcohol, espresso drinks (about $3-4), the premium Wi-Fi upgrade, spa, casino, retail, Shore Things excursions, Treat Yourself items, and the $10 ShipEats delivery fee (waived over $10 of paid items and for RockStar suites).
- No bottled water is sold (single-use plastics are banned; filtered water is free), and you may carry on 2 x 750ml bottles of wine per cabin.
- Adults-only line: every Sailor is 18+. Drinking age is 21 in US waters and ports, 18 in international waters; Alaska itineraries are 21 for the whole voyage.

Do both people in a cabin need their own Bar Tab?
No. The Bar Tab is per person but not required for cabin mates, and the credit is freely shareable - one Bar Tab can cover both of you.
How much bonus credit does the Bar Tab add?
By the official tiers: $0 on a $100 buy, $25 on $200, $50 on $300, $100 on $500, $175 on $750, and $250 on $1,000 - which works out to 12.5% to 25% in extra credit.
