Is NCL Free at Sea Worth It in 2026?
Free at Sea is not free - the open bar perk carries a daily service charge and the dining perk a one-time fee. It can still be one of the best deals in mainstream cruising for people who drink. Here is what it really costs, from NCL's own terms.
The short answer
For most cruisers who drink, yes. On a 7-night cruise for 2 adults at 3 drinks a day, Free at Sea's real charges total $519 and the trip lands at $1,009, versus $1,414 paying a la carte - $405 ahead.
The catch is the word free: the open bar costs $28.50-$32 per person per day in service charges, the dining perk $20-$80 one-time per covered guest, and the Wi-Fi perk is 150 minutes, not a plan.
The worked example, priced both ways

The beverage charge is tiered by voyage length: $32.00 per person per day on 2-5 night sailings, $28.50 on 6 nights or more (Pride of America stays flat $28.50). The dining charge is one-time per covered guest: $20 / $40 / $60 / $80 by 2-4 / 5-6 / 7-8 / 9+ nights. Both charges ARE the gratuities - nothing is added on top of them.
How the real product works in 2026
Free at Sea is OPT-IN: NCL calls it “Choose Up To 5 Offers” and you select perks at booking (or up to 24 hours before sailing). Skip a perk and you skip its charge; booking with no perks at all is legitimate. All guests in the stateroom must choose the same offers.
- Open bar: $32.00/person/day on 2-5 night sailings, $28.50 on 6+ - prepaid, and this charge IS the gratuity. Every guest of drinking age pays; under-21 guests 1-2 get the Soda Package at $12.50/person/day instead (under-21 guests 3-8 get nothing).
- Specialty dining: a one-time charge per covered guest (guests 1-2, ages 13+): $20 / $40 / $60 / $80 by voyage length, with 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 meals per covered guest. The onboard equivalents run $72-$288, so pre-booking is far cheaper. Guests 3+ get no meal allotment.
- Wi-Fi: 150 minutes PER PERSON, one login, one device at a time, no streaming. It is an allowance, not a plan - real Wi-Fi still means the $29.99/day pass ($14.99/day per extra device).
- Shore excursions: a $50 credit per port, first guest on the reservation only; unused credit is forfeited.
- Free at Sea Plus (the $49.99/person/day upgrade): premium pours up to $25, unlimited streaming Wi-Fi, Starbucks, and 50% off ADDITIONAL specialty covers. It adds NO extra free meals and does NOT absorb the beverage service charge. Children 3-20 in positions 1-2 pay $40/day; ages 2 and under cannot buy it. Prepay your daily service charges and NCL discounts the upgrade by $15/adult and $20/child per day.

- Specialty meals beyond the allotment: cover plus 20% (Free at Sea Plus halves those extra covers)
- Drinks for under-21 guests 3-8 (they receive nothing under the beverage perk)
- The beverage and dining service charges themselves - the "free" perks' real price
The dining perk cannot be purchased onboard - it is a booking-time decision.
The gratuity details most comparisons get wrong
- The open bar's service charge IS the gratuity - $28.50-$32 per person per day, prepaid. Comparisons that call Free at Sea free and then add 20% on top double-count; comparisons that ignore the charge entirely miss about $400 per couple per week.
- Without the perk, NCL adds a 20% gratuity on a la carte drinks AND on specialty covers. NCL's own onboard Free at Sea meal pricing corroborates it: the $60 cover times 1.20 equals the $72 onboard price.
- The daily service charge is $20/person/day for Club Balcony Suite and below, $25 for The Haven and Suites - and NCL is the one big line that exempts children under 3. Hawaii sailings add 4.275% GET.
- A 5-night sailing pays MORE per day for the open bar than a 7-night one ($32.00 vs $28.50) - the tier flipped for departures on or after May 1, 2026, and older comparison articles still show flat $28.50 everywhere.

Can I skip Free at Sea perks I will not use?

How many specialty meals does Free at Sea include?

Does Free at Sea Plus include extra free specialty meals?
No. Free at Sea Plus adds 50% off covers BEYOND your Free at Sea allotment (children 12 and under pay a flat $20 reduced cover) - not additional free meals. It also does not absorb the beverage service charge, which still applies on top of the $49.99/day upgrade.
Do children pay Free at Sea charges?
Under-21 guests 1-2 are charged the $12.50-a-day Soda Package when the beverage perk is selected; under-21 guests 3-8 get nothing and pay nothing for it. The separate daily service charge applies from age 3 - children under 3 are exempt, which is unique among the big lines.
